"Spirit of Wardrobe" -- CD
Koji Asano is a young intriguing japanese musician .He apparently comes from a classical music background and has already released on his own label 25 CDs on a 3 CD per year basis ! Apart from some records of modern violin and piano works, each cd is generally composed in one unique and long digital sonic experimentation.
The present CD is very puzzling in its concept. Indeed , the disc is a 60 min long silent track with very few bursts of sound. The very rare used sounds come from shorts fragments recorded in Asano's backyard in Barcelona which when put together represents a maximum duration of one or two minutes.
There is no apparent logic or structure in the positioning of these samples amongst this enormous silence but it results in a tense and strange atmosphere: nothing happens, you forget your Cd player and suddenly a dense glimpse of sound; you then become again attentive but have no idea when the following "sonore event" will happen (or won't?).
I should say that the effect of this record is definetely depending on your activity during the CD playing. If like me you are involved in other activities during the listening and not only concentrating on it, the surprising effect of these mere digital sounds is particurlarly effective and puzzling. A strange record from an overproductive peculiar artist.
